An analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data released Thursday reveals that the number of undocumented immigrants in the United States dropped from 12 million to 11.1 million between 2007 and 2011.

The struggling economy and stronger border enforcement are believed to be the reasons for the fall.

As a result, the number of Asian immigrants to the United States surpassed the number of Latin American immigrants for the first time since 1910, the analysis of census data found.

California is one of the states where there was a greater increase in the number of foreign-born Asians than foreign-born Latinos.

The estimates are mostly based upon the Census Bureau?s Current Population Survey ? which samples households across the nation ? through March 2011.

The analysis shows that 28 percent of immigrants in the United States are undocumented, 31 percent are legal permanent residents and 37 percent are naturalized U.S. citizens.

The Census Bureau does not ask respondents their immigration status, so Pew Hispanic Center senior demographer Jeffrey Passel made the estimates largely by subtracting the estimated number of legal immigrants from the total population of immigrants. William Frey of the Brookings Institution and Mark Mather of the Population Reference Bureau also contributed to the analysis.

Pew plans on releasing an estimate of the 2012 illegal-immigrant population in early 2013.
