Top 5 Energy Stocks To Watch For 2014

?The majority of the nation's 18-wheeler truck fleets will be fueled by natural gas in seven years.

?

This is what billionaire energy investor T.?Boone Pickens told the New York Times last week. Pickens has been pushing for natural gas as a transportation fuel for decades.

?

Over the past few years, his arguments have started to make more sense. New technologies have helped the U.S. uncover?a massive supply of natural gas. That pushed prices down and made it economical for transportation companies to switch from diesel to natural gas.

?

I've been writing about this trend for years. Subscribers to my Small Stock Specialist newsletter have made as much as 116% from buying natural gas transportation stocks early.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Ken Sweet]

Natural Gas producers, such as Cabot Oil & Gas (COG), have been among this year's best performing stocks, helped by higher energy prices and heightened interest in the exploration of oil shale and other rock formations for alternative fuel sources.

Cabot Oil owns drilling rights in the Marcellus shale, a geological formation in the Appalachians containing massive quantities of natural gas.

While Marcellus shale has large quantities of natural gas, drilling efforts are still too early to have a meaningful impact on Cabot's business. The company recently reported an adjusted profit of $20.7 million, or 20 cents a share, giving Cabot a hefty price-to-earnings ratio of 52. That type of ratio puts Cabot shares up there with dotcom names like Netflix (NFLX).

Many analysts remain bullish on Cabot. Bank of America analysts recently upgraded their price target on Cabot shares to $105.

UK calls fraud investigators for security firm G4S

LONDON (AP) ? The British government said Thursday it was calling in fraud investigators after auditors found security giant G4S had overcharged by millions of pounds (dollars) on contracts to monitor offenders using electronic tags.

Justice Secretary Chris Grayling said he was asking the Serious Fraud Office to investigate after G4S refused to take part in a forensic audit of its contract.

He said an initial audit had found that G4S and another firm, Serco, had charged the government for people they were not actually monitoring ? and in a small number of cases for offenders who had died.

Grayling said the overcharging was in the "low tens of millions," went at least as far back as the start of the current tagging contracts in 2005, and could have begun as long ago as 1999.

He said Serco had agreed to a forensic audit to determine whether dishonesty had been involved in the overcharging, but G4S had refused.

The detailed audit would include examining internal emails between company executives to determine what happened.

Grayling told lawmakers in the House of Commons he felt "astonishment that two of the government's biggest suppliers would seek to charge in this way."

"The billing practices in question were clearly unacceptable and the government will take all necessary steps to secure a refund for the taxpayer," he said.

He said the government was reviewing all its existing contracts with Serco and with G4S, one of the world's biggest private security firms. The government paid G4S more than 394 million pounds ($595 million) in the 2012-2013 financial year.

The fraud investigation is the latest bad news for G4S. Last year, Britain had to call in thousands of troops to help with security at the London Olympics after G4S acknowledged it couldn't provide the 10,400 guards it had been contracted to deliver.

This week, prosecutors said they were considering criminal charges over an Angolan man who died after being restrained by G4S guards during deportation from Britain.

G4S shares fell 3.7 percent to 2.17 pounds ($3.28) on the London Stock Exchange after the government announcement.

BlackBerry reportedly loses execs responsible for social apps, BB10 Hub

BlackBerry has had trouble retaining executives as of late, and its situation may not be getting much better when the Wall Street Journal claims that two software overseers recently left the company. T.A. McCann (pictured at left), a VP who oversaw BBM and social networking apps, reportedly said goodbye two weeks ago. Marc Gingras (right), who masterminded the BlackBerry 10 Hub and came with the Tungle.me acquisition, supposedly quit in "recent weeks." BlackBerry hasn't commented on the rumored exits, although the Journal believes that both McCann and Gingras left voluntarily. If real, the departures aren't coming at a good time -- BlackBerry is in rough financial straits, and it needs executives willing to turn the ship around.

MOSCOW (AP) ? Edward Snowden has found supporters in Latin America, including three countries who have offered him asylum. But many obstacles stand in the way of the fugitive NSA leaker from leaving a Russian airport ? chief among them the power and influence of the United States.

Because Snowden's U.S. passport has been revoked, the logistics of him departing are complicated. Venezuela, Nicaragua and Bolivia have made asylum offers over the past two days, but the three countries haven't indicated they would help Snowden by issuing a travel document, which he would need to leave Russia.

The former NSA systems analyst, who is charged with violating U.S. espionage laws, is believed to be stuck in the transit area of Moscow's main international airport after arriving June 23 from Hong Kong.

Russia doesn't appear willing to help him leave the airport, with Kremlin spokesman Alexei Pavlov saying Saturday the issue of Snowden's travel documents is "not our business." On Monday, President Vladimir Putin said Snowden would be offered asylum in Russia if he stopped leaking U.S. secrets. Snowden then withdrew his Russian asylum bid, a Russian official said.

While President Barack Obama has publicly displayed a relaxed attitude toward Snowden's movements, saying last month that he wouldn't be "scrambling jets" to capture him, other senior U.S. officials have used unusually harsh language that they want him back.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said China had "unquestionably" damaged its relationship with Washington for not returning Snowden, who recently turned 30, from semi-autonomous Hong Kong while he was still there.

"The Chinese have emphasized the importance of building mutual trust," Carney said last month. "We think that they have dealt that effort a serious setback. If we cannot count on them to honor their legal extradition obligations, then there is a problem."

China may be reluctant to further complicate its relationship with the U.S. by allowing Snowden back in Hong Kong, even if only as a transfer point to Latin America.

Snowden has asked for asylum in more than 20 countries and many have turned him down. WikiLeaks, which has been helping Snowden, said Friday he had submitted asylum applications to six new countries, which the secret-spilling website declined to identify "due to attempted U.S. interference."

The asylum offers from Venezuela, Nicaragua and Bolivia came after leftist South American leaders gathered to denounce the rerouting of Bolivian President Evo Morales' plane over Europe amid reports that the fugitive American was aboard.

Spain says it had been warned along with other European countries that Snowden was aboard the Bolivian presidential plane, an acknowledgement the manhunt for the fugitive leaker had something to do with the plane's unexpected diversion to Austria. It is unclear whether Washington warned Madrid about the Bolivian president's plane.

On Saturday, Morales offered asylum to Snowden, but didn't say if Bolivia had received a request from him.

"I want to tell those Europeans and North Americans that as a just protest we now will give asylum to that North American who is persecuted by his compatriots," Morales said during an appearance in the indigenous town of Chipaya.

U.S. officials have declined to comment on the grounding of Morales' plane. They said they won't give details about their conversations with European countries, except to say that they have stated Washington's general position that it wants Snowden back.

Snowden, who on Saturday afternoon wasn't on an Interpol list of people for whom international arrest warrants have been issued, had booked a seat on a Havana-bound flight on June 24, but never made it.

Direct Havana flights, operated by Aeroflot from Moscow's main airport five times a week, are the easiest option of reaching Latin America from Moscow. But the Moscow-Havana's travel path passes over mainland U.S., raising the chances of it being grounded. There are other routes, but there is no assurance he'd have free passage.

They say music soothes the savage breast, but at British singer Jessie J.'s "Isle of MTV" performance in Malta on Wednesday, music didn't keep two concertgoers from breaking out into a fight.

The singer was in the middle of her song, "Rainbow," which ironically is about how people are all similar and should get along, when she noticed the altercation between two fans near the stage. "Stop the music, stop the music," she shouted to her band in a video captured by a fan and posted to You Tube. (The fighting fans can't clearly be seen in the video.)

"OK, so, you guys in the front, guys ... see I don't perform when people are fighting," the singer announced, as the audience applauded her words.

"OH MY GOD!" another fan could be heard saying.

"OK, so here's the deal right?" Jessie J. continued. "Music is about bringing people together. You don't need that angriness in your lives, OK? So kiss and make up and let's party."

"Jes-sie! Jes-sie!" fans chanted in appreciation.

"Let's go, let's go again," the singer told her band, before delivering one more word to the fighters. "Look at me, come on, look at me. Are we good? Sort it out, bro."
