Life's a beach for Prince Harry

When a royal presence was needed at the women's beach volleyball finals on Wednesday, there was only one man for the job: step forward, Prince Harry.

The party-loving 27-year-old is no stranger to Horse Guards Parade, where his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II's birthday is celebrated annually with a military pageant.

But there were no scarlet tunics in sight this time -- just plenty of tanned thighs, toned muscles and tight-fitting bikinis.

Which scenario the army attack helicopter pilot prefers he has not let on.

However, he certainly seemed in his element in the rocking 15,000-seater temporary Olympic venue, with its thumping dance music.

Harry snuck in part-way through the first set of the bronze medal match, where Larissa Franca and Juliana Silva of Brazil beat China's Xue Chen and Zhang Xi of China by two sets to one.

The prince, third in line to the throne, was there in his role as an ambassador for the Great Britain team.

"If I knew that, I would have won the game," Zhang told AFP.

His appearance got the Brazilian seal of approval.

"I have to give a kiss to him, he is so nice! Today he has brought luck for us!," Juliana told AFP.

Larissa added: "I didn't know he was here or I would have celebrated more! It's great that he's here and it's good to know that our sport is getting recognised."

Dressed casually in a Team GB polo neck t-shirt with his shades in his hand, he sat next to British double gold medal-winning track cyclists Laura Trott and Jason Kenny.

Former England football captain David Beckham also joined the party, and was quickly posing for pictures with fans.

The atmosphere was pumping, with people on their feet dancing in the rows to the pounding beats and Mexican waves rolling round the stands.

"The more noise the better! This isn't Wimbledon, darlings!" hollered the announcer.

Harry was treated to several vibrant routines by the Horse Guards Parade Dance Crew, featuring 11 women in flowery bikinis, who saluted the stand he was in.

Harry's fellow troops, on security duty, got their cameras out to fire off a few photos -- but this time of the prince rather than the athletes on the sand.

And there was yet more star power for the all-US gold medal match, where Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings beat Jennifer Kessy and April Ross in straight sets to claim their third consecutive beach volleyball Olympic title.

Horse Guards Parade is one of the most spectacular locations of the London 2012 Games, situated in the heart of British political power. Harry's Clarence House home is a five-minute walk away.

Intel's Thin Mini-ITX platform gets stuffed inside a monitor

Intel's Thin MiniITX platform gets stuffed inside a monitor

You don't have to build custom motherboards and source specialty components to build a sleek all-in-one PC. At least not anymore, thanks to Intel's Thin Mini-ITX platform, which it debuted roughly a year ago at Computex. The main board is the same footprint as Mini-ITX (that's a 6.7-inch square), but it calls for a much shallower construction -- with horizontally stacked RAM and a shorter port cluster to keep the whole thing under an inch tall. To maintain its sleek physique, Intel pairs the desktop-class Core processor at the heart with a laptop-style heatsink and fan. It's a pretty interesting standard from Chipzilla, which Tech Report ripped into, peeling back all it's layers like a silicon onion. The layout of all the essential jacks does pose a bit of an issue once the whole thing is set up, but its hard not to be impressed by the elegance and simplicity of the system. To see the whole thing torn down, then reassembled inside the chassis of an LCD panel, hit up the source link.

Cathay Pacific posts first-half net loss of HK$935 mn

Cathay Pacific Airways posted a first-half net loss of HK$935 million ($121 million) on Wednesday, citing higher fuel prices, strong competition and economic instability in Europe.

The loss for the six months ended June 30 compared with a first-half net profit of HK$2.81 billion a year earlier, representing a 133 percent reversal for the blue-chip Asian airline. Revenue rose 4.4 percent to HK$48.86 billion.

Company chairman Christopher Pratt said the carrier's business had been "significantly affected by the persistently high price of jet fuel, passenger yields coming under pressure and weak air cargo demand".

"These factors are common to the aviation industry as a whole. Airlines around the world are being adversely affected by the current business environment," he said in a statement.

"Our profits from associated companies, including Air China, also showed a marked decline."

He said a recent reduction in the fuel price could "provide welcome relief".

"We will continue to take whatever measures are necessary to protect the business, managing short-term difficulties while remaining committed to our long-term strategy," he said.

"Our financial position remains strong and we are in a good position to deal with our current challenges."

Women Now Accelerate Customer Service at Car Dealerships ...

PITTSBURGH, PA ? Women are the fastest growing segment of car buyers at car dealerships, spending billions of dollars annually on new and used cars, as well as car service and maintenance. They?re more confident, educated, and prepared to make smart car decisions than ever before, and thanks to dealer rating websites like Women? Drivers.com, Facebook, Twitter and other online outlets, women are also voicing their opinions on those decisions in greater numbers.

They are finally catching the attention of car dealers, for good reason. Recent findings by the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association show 9 out of 10 women are involved in their household?s vehicle maintenance and repair decision?making process. Industry experts say that 65?70% of the customers taking cars in for service and repair are women. The landscape of the traditional male?oriented and male?dominated dealership is changing.

?Car dealerships have to treat women respectfully or they risk sending customers to their nearest competitor ? another dealership, or an independent specialty or ?big box? auto repair store,? says Anne Fleming, President of Women?Drivers.com. The car dealer review site is a marketplace connecting women to dealerships that already promote trust and transparency, as demonstrated through their Women Satisfaction Index? (WSI) scores. ?Our service reviews underscore the bottom line for women ? when they are treated respectfully and have a good experience, they return to that dealership again and again.?

This is no surprise to dealerships, as customer retention is critical to their business. Vehicle owners visit a dealership?s service lane two to three times a year. The more a customer comes back the higher the likelihood they will not only return for service in the future, but will also purchase their next car there.

Women?Drivers.com?s Top 10 Dealer Brands for Women?s Experience with Service & Maintenance Women?Drivers.com?s mid?year WSI? Service scores, indicated by nearly 1,400 reviews (in which 5 is the highest possible rating) showcase the top women?friendly brands ? Mercedes?Benz (4.70), Honda (4.64), BMW (4.60), Acura (4.43), Lexus (4.42), Buick and GMC (4.25), Jeep (4.22), Toyota (4.17) and Chrysler (4.09). Paying close attention to their customer satisfaction performance is paying off. The midyear report showed:

    • 73% of women said they will service their car at the dealership in the future.
    • 53% said they have their car service work completed at the same dealership where they purchased their car.
    • 66% of the women received follow?up communication from the dealership after the work was completed.

?Women recognize that Mercedes?Benz is the leader in the luxury car business ? At Jack Ingram Motors we take pride in establishing relationships with our customers, which is why customer service is our number one priority, and we know that women pay close attention to the level of service they receive from their Mercedes dealership. We are also proud to say that both our parts and service managers are women,? says Dick Bennett, Mercedes?Benz General Manager at Jack Ingram Motors, Inc. in Montgomery, Alabama.

All top 10 car brands earned high scores from women respondents asked to rate their experience on nine service issues, including everything from the ease of scheduling a visit and the cleanliness of the car after servicing, to how closely estimates matched the charged total, the quality of the work, and whether they were treated with respect.

Room to Improve ? Negative Data Trends

Many brands remain below the top 10 with lots of room yet to improve regarding customer service and satisfaction. Women?Drivers.com?s research across all brands reflects forthcoming feedback from women on their dealership service department experiences. Highlights include:

    • 41% were dissatisfied with their last experience.
    • 34% didn?t like the way the service advisor spoke to them or the way they were treated.
    • 33% said that their problem wasn?t resolved to their satisfaction.
    • 23% thought the dealership was lacking in concierge services.
    • 22% said the dealerships hours weren?t convenient.

For those that said they would no longer use their originating service department:

    • 69% said they would have their car serviced at the dealership if they were provided with a courtesy vehicle.
    • 41% wanted the dealership to have more amenities like a child play area, Internet and wireless capability, or a television.

5 Features of Top?Notch Customer Service

Five variables are utilized, in part or in whole, by forward?thinking dealerships with extraordinarily high loyalty and retention rates with women consumers. They are:

    • More Women in the Workplace: Over 18% of women working at car dealerships and many are in the position of service advisor, the first line of contact with the dealership?s customers. These dealerships realize that seeing a knowledgeable woman behind the service counter makes female customers more comfortable to ask questions concerning repairs.
    • Using Technology to Communicate Repair Needs: Most dealers continue to focus on ?verbal selling? instead of ?visual selling.? Women, many of whom are skeptical of ?up sells at the dealership? decline the additional or unforeseen recommendation over 40% of the time. Why? Customers want proof to ensure that the repair is warranted ? and, when they cannot see the problem many opt out, and may even feel suspicious about it. Companies like ClearMechanic.com develop technology for automotive dealerships including mobile apps, expert illustration content and web?based tools to ?visually explain? repairs with real?time photos and videos. Customers and dealerships alike see this as win?win. Dealerships that use this ?proof?based? technology have a 20?40% increase in success on additional service recommendations while their customer retention rates and CSI scores improve.
    • Go Beyond TV: Make the service waiting area into places where women are comfortable spending time, especially mothers with children. A relaxed and friendly atmosphere with comfortable seating, WiFi connectivity, and flat?screen TVs are a start. The warmth of the waiting area, the types of magazines provided and the wall colors also enhance the space. Provide hot and cool beverages and a children?s designated play center. Allow for free transportation services so women can run errands while waiting for their car to be finished. Where possible, allow for courtesy overnight vehicles ? this concierge service is employed by luxury brands and can have a real impact on women using a dealership, so trickle?down brands and dealerships take note.
    • Expand Hours: According to the National Automobile Dealers Association, the average service department is open 56 hours a week compared to an 80 hour average for a specialty car repair chain store. With 40% of children today being born to unwed mothers and 29.5% of households run by single parents, dealerships that expand their hours are expanding their customer base.
    • The Golden Rule: Put a highly trained listener into the position of Service Advisor ? the professional who can hear not only what women are actually saying, but also be interested in what they aren?t saying. Abandon the role as the know?it?all automotive expert and strive to support and educate women throughout the entire sales process. Treat women with respect and treat them as the savvy consumers they are.

Without question, customer service and customer satisfaction are being re?defined by women car buyers and dealerships alike. Women value relationships and trust car dealers who focus on building a long?term relationship, not just making a sale. Every dealership should strive to be identified as a dealership that women trust, since providing superior service to its women customers means that same level of service to all of customers.

Priebus Calls Reid a 'Dirty Liar'

Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus echoed the new Republican attack on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Sunday, accusing him of being a "dirty liar" for his comments about Mitt Romney's tax returns.

"I'm not going to respond to a dirty liar who hasn't filed a single page of tax returns himself," he said on ABC's This Week.

Reid has alleged that Romney is refusing to release his tax returns because he hasn't paid taxes for the past 10 years, an accusation that picked up steam this week as Reid repeated it on the Senate floor on Thursday. But on Sunday, Republicans went on the attack, with Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., accusing Reid of being a liar on CNN's State of the Union, and Priebus following suit.

Priebus characterized Reid as hypocritical in his focus on Romney's tax returns, saying that he "complains about people with money but lives in the Ritz Carlton here down the street." He refused to answer the allegations, however, calling it a "made-up issue" and saying that discussion of Reid's allegations was ridiculous.

    100% The Invisible War

    All Critics (41) | Top Critics (14) | Fresh (41) | Rotten (0)

"The Invisible War" makes all too clear that the military isn't very good at justice.

One hearing noted that the victim was dressed provocatively. In her official uniform.

For sheer infuriation value, you can't do much better than Kirby Dick's quietly scathing documentary on rape in the US military.

Dick, whose films include a revealing expose about the movie industry's film ratings board, has created yet another galvanizing call to action with "The Invisible War."

What happened to these women after the rape often shocks and disturbs them as much as the physical act itself.

It is far too difficult to watch. Which means we must.

Kirby Dick has again shown great restraint in presenting such inflammatory material, betting a clear-eyed approach will have an inflammatory effect on his audience -- and it does.

Basically, the message from the military to potential rape victims is: if you get raped, it's your own fault...

One of those documentaries that you watch both fascinated and repulsed - and one of those films that you sense just might be instrumental in helping to change an utterly unacceptable status quo.

...totally serious but, still, incredibly informative and quite shocking with his plethora of data.

In the end there is something to cheer about - vindication for some victims, and proof that a film can make a difference.

We learn that a military court has determined that rape is 'an occupational hazard' of serving in the military.

If this enrages you, it should.

If it doesn't make you angry, you're not human.

    Agonizing, infuriating - and effective.

The film is persuasive and infuriating without leaving much hope for change.

[P]owerful rage against system carried by victims who detail sexism, harassment, stalking, rape, reprisals, and rebuffed complaints [whose] attackers haven't been punished.

Convincing look at how the military ignores rape and sexual assault within its ranks.

Powerful, provocative and deeply moving. One of the most vital and enraging documentaries of the year.

Can You Retire Like Me In 5 Years? | Joe's Free Article Directory

Posted in: Finance on August 5th, 2012

Because supplemental income may be necessary, retired people can pursue a few avenues to make ends-meat. For the elderly who enjoy being out and about, obtaining a laid back part-time job that is easy to perform is one way to gain extra money.

Investment properties are a great way to plan supplemental income for a retirement. During a person?s life time while they work, buying property and either renting it out or maintaining it for resale is an investment gold mine.

Although many people do not care to think about it until they pass their middle age mark, it is never too soon to begin investing money for the future and/or retirement.

One of the wonderful things about investing money in this day and age is all of the options. It is not like it was 50 years ago. You are not limited to a 401K, a few stocks, and maybe some bonds. Nowadays, you may want to consider a Roth Ira.

How much should you invest? Well, this all depends on what you need to live on, and what you need for the future. Everyone is different. While effective ways to invest money are important, the portion you invest is also something to put some thought into. Clearly you cannot invest what you do not have.

For many people, retirement is that light at the end of the tunnel which is worked for throughout the course of our entire lives. Many people believe that retirement is when they live on easy street for the rest of their lives, but there are many pitfalls on the way to this address.

Decide which retirement plan best suits personal needs and choose between a 401K, IRA, Roth IRA, or investment 401K options. A lot of people who work for corporations and companies are offered a 401k plan in their contract with that business. A 401K is a deduction straight out of a person?s paycheck that gets put into a company account that may or may not have a company match policy.

The stock market is probably the highest risk and the highest reward for planning a retirement. Some companies offer investments back into the company and on the market general with money that normally would go into a 401k. If a company is strong, it can be much better than taking a smaller profit from a mutual fund or 401k. However, when investing in weaker companies, people stand to lose their entire nest egg.

Relocate to a lower cost of living area. If you are currently living in a major city with high property tax, income tax and sales tax, consider moving to cities or urban centers, or even overseas, where the cost of living is lower to stretch a small retirement income.

If you decide to rent a house or an apartment, you will also eliminate the expenses associated with owning a house, such as property taxes, utility costs, and maintenance cost for a house, not to mention not having to deal with the usual headaches of home-ownership.

You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.

Entrepreneurship Student Takes on Formula SAE Lincoln | CSUF ...

During June, Trevor Smith, a recent graduate from Cal State Fullerton, represented his alma mater in an international competition in Lincoln, Nebraska called Formula SAE. As you can tell by the name this is a racing competition. Schools from all over the world developed small race cars for this competition.

While most of the competition is about engineering there is a sizable portion that is about business. And that is where Trevor and his team come in. His group developed a business plan for the production and sale of this race car and he presented his work at Formula SAE.

What follows is Trevor?s diary of the event. I hope you enjoy it.

Thursday June 21st: The Big DAY

After a quick night in Houston, I get some sleep to get up and grab a taxi to the airport around 6:00am. Today is the Big Day, everything the business team, as well as engineering team, comes down to this day, Thursday June 21st, 2012. Literally, everything, meaning our Business Plan presentation, is today. Likewise, the first stages of the SAE Formula competition begin, which are comprised of the judging of whether or not each teams? vehicle meets the competition?s technical specifications that all cars must pass the three stages of testing in order to actually compete in the performance events. With my big presentation on the line, I pray that I get into Lincoln on time. Lady, luck was on my side this day; I arrived in Omaha, Nebraska around 10:00 a.m. and made the drive out to Lincoln, Nebraska by 11:00am

In getting into Lincoln before my presentation at 1:30, this gave me just enough time to gather up the lead engineer, Ben Lahiji, from the life or death technical specifications testing, and brush him up on the presentation flow, which slides we were to present, as well as any and all materials needed to present with. Both Ben and I arrived early to the off-sight location (which was an elementary school actually) to present. Once it was our turn, Ben and I walked into the small elementary school classroom to be greeted by a panel of 5 judges.

Low and behold, we forgot to bring the PROJECTOR even though it explicitly states that one must be brought in the RULEBOOK. AHHH!!! Adversity! How sweetly sporadic are thee! We rolled with the punches though and delivered a highly creative and dynamic presentation; especially after presenting on a 17 inch laptop to a panel of 5 judges sitting at 5 elementary school desks. The panel feedback was that our business presentation was unique in their experience as judges in this completion.

One strategy in particular that the panel liked was partnering with official racetracks and racing schools. Not only did we envision selling our vehicles to the racetracks and racing schools so that they could rent the vehicles out but that they would also become resellers.

After a successful panel discussion, both Ben and I headed back to the old air force runway out in Lincoln where the SAE competition was being held?. The pits (we called it the ?Concrete Jungle?) was amongst us and we were submerged in the thick of it all. The vehicle? Passed all the tech specs?

Tilt Test and Decibel Test, which had to be under 110, we came in at 109 , with 2 mufflers!!! And Brake Test, which was to lock up all 4 brakes at once?. With a successful day out on the runway, our vehicle was ready to take on the performance events of tomorrow: acceleration, skid-pad, and autocross? until then?.

Friday June 22nd: The Real Deal?

Friday was one of the most exciting days of the whole trip. The day started off around 9:30 a.m. 4.3 seconds is close to the fastest time put down on the acceleration event, and we, meaning CSUF?s SAE team, put it down. The rest of the day was also a BIG success. The team outperformed last years? vehicle, in ALL aspects of the competition.

The design aspect earned 50 points versus that of last year?s 46. This design part of the competition consisted of a presentation from the engineering standpoint on how well the team was able to maximize the overall design with the technical specifications outlined by the SAE rulebook.

After the design presentation, there is a COST aspect or COST report that is submitted for judging. This years? team was able to post 66.7 points versus that of last year?s 61. The cost report is an integral part of the competition due to the nature in which the cost report can either make or break the accompanying business plan. Basically, it?s just like any other business. If it costs more to make than you can make back by selling the product you will be out of business in no short order. And that would seriously hurt the business plan.

However, in order to better conceptualize the achievements/strides the team made from the previous year to this year within the business plan, is the fact that the 2011 SAE team had NO business plan WHATSOEVER. Thus, the business presentation this year was exponentially better than last year?s plan; such that the team came from nothing to something. The 2012 team scored 52.5 points versus that of the 18 points received from the previous year.

This dramatic increase in the overall points earned for the business presentation can be attributed not only to the fact that the team actually HAD a business presentation BUT also the creative strategies and overall thoroughness of the research conducted to justify the business plan, provided by none other than myself and the rest of the business team. After being out at the competition, it was clear, that having business students create the business plan was one of the BIG differentiating factors CSUF?s team was able to boast about.

Yet we still had to take on one of the other BIG performance events and the Autocross event was looming over us. The penultimate event, Autocross was unique in that it dictated the order in which teams would race on Saturday, the last day of the competition, in the non plus ultra of the overall competition, the ENDURANCE event. To begin, Autocross is a two lap, single driver race comprised of a large, dynamic track, designed to test the skills of even the best drivers. The faster the time, the later in the day, Saturday, the team will get to race.

Our team posted a solid time of 59 seconds, which was only six seconds behind the fastest time recorded on that day. We were in the middle of the run, for racing in the Endurance event?.Needless to say, the weather say?s to expect rain, which is going to make for an exciting 19 lap Endurance event?.

Saturday June 23rd: Endurance event?Always Always Double, Triple, Quadruple Check Everything?

With a time of 59 seconds posted in the Autocross event, our team was able to avoid having to race early in the morning. This was crucial, due to the fact that it was raining CATS AND DOGS Saturday morning, thus causing the first few teams, who posted slower times the day before, to post even slower times the morning of the Endurance event.

Let?s just put this Endurance event in perspective now, there were 80 teams total that attempted to compete in Nebraska, of those 80, 40 were able to pass tech. specs. & then get the go ahead to compete in the performance event(s). Of those 40 competitors, 20 raced Saturday morning, in the rain. Only 9 of the 20 teams successfully finished the 19 lap (10 laps with the one driver, and the latter 9 with a second driver). The morning poured rain, yet the storm seemed to pass by lunchtime. This was a blessing in disguise enabling the CSUF team to have good racing conditions, or otherwise DRY racing conditions to perform in the competitions LAST and most important Endurance event.

Our team was able to get through the first 8 laps, when adversity struck, or a bolt simply was not tightened all the way and fell off, then causing the chain to fall off, and cause the vehicle to be RED FLAGGED and ultimately disqualified from the Endurance event.

The team was devastated, even more so knowing that we could have successfully finished the Endurance event and managed to place in the top ten. However, despite the human error, the team was incredibly pleased with their overall performance out in Lincoln, Nebraska. The team placed 31st overall out of the total 80 teams present. Yet, if the team could have finished the Endurance event, which accounts for 1/3 of the competitions total points, the team could have placed in the top ten.

We were aware of this due to the fact that Cal-Poly Pomona?s SAE team scored lower in all of the events than we did, yet, they were able to manage through the Endurance event, and place 7th overall. Thus, if we were able to just finish the Endurance event, and get some of the 300 points, we would have been sitting much higher than that of 31st. Nonetheless, you live and learn, and always remember to check, double check, triple check, and even quadruple check all the components of the vehicle BEFORE any and all events, so that the vehicle is maximized for high performance output.

TURNED AWAY AT THE NURSING HOME-NO ... - Eldercare Tips

Posted on August 2, 2012 - by Nurse Virginia

Her grandma Lilly was 82 years old. She had been living alone and really doing quite well till about a month ago. Lilly started talking about having a ?full feeling? around her abdomen. This became progressively worse until she was having trouble keeping food down and the doctor put her in the hospital for tests.

Two days later grandma Lilly has a diagnosis of end stage liver cancer, and they aren?t going to treat it. The hospital recommends that Lilly go to a nursing facility. The family agrees because there is no one available to take care of grandma, so the family comes to pick her up to take her to the local nursing home. Only to find out once at the nursing home that yes Medicare benefits pay for 100 days of nursing home care, but only after you have spent 3 nights in the hospital.

Now Lilly?s granddaughter wonders how many of the hospital staff who saw Lilly knew this information and never said anything. Couldn?t they have kept her that one more night which would mean so much to Lilly now? Lilly doesn?t have 100 days of life left; it would have been nice to be taken care of by healthcare professionals her last days instead of feeling like a burden to her family

Lilly is a real grandma, but in healthcare we are seeing more and more Lilly?s. And now there is yet another consideration that families need to be aware of. Hospitals are answerable to new regulations that frown upon re-admissions. Hospitals are in danger of losing major funding if they have a bad record of re-admissions. So they now are bringing more and more seniors into the hospital for ?observation.?

You could literally be in the hospital several days and not be considered admitted because your status is observation. Those days of observation do not qualify for the 3 over nights necessary for Medicare benefits in a nursing facility, you must actually be admitted

Looks like there will be many more Lillys, Berthas, Vivians, ?Edgars, Ralphs, and so on that will need to be taken care of by their families.

How Michael Araten utilizes people and planning ... - Smart Business

    Michael Araten

Michael Araten, president and CEO, K'NEX Brands LP

K?NEX Brands LP has been taking a bigger and bigger bite out of its market ever since Michael Araten took over as president and CEO in 2006. In the past six years, the manufacturer of building toys has formed partnerships linking the K?NEX brand with brands such as Nintendo, Sesame Street and NASCAR.

This year, the company will introduce a line of toys licensed by Rovio Entertainment, makers of the ?Angry Birds? video game franchise.

The tie-ins that Araten and his leadership team have orchestrated are having a major impact on the company?s bottom line. In 2008, K?NEX produced about $100 million in North American sales. In 2011, the company?s North American sales had jumped to $150 million.

Given all the success that K?NEX has had, what is Araten?s first tip on managing growth?

?I would tell other leaders to be lazy,? he says.

No, Araten hasn?t discovered the secret to building a highly successful enterprise from your living room couch. But he has developed a good grasp of what a CEO should and shouldn?t be doing when piloting a company through a growth phase.

?What I mean is, the first question when I?m looking at a task is, ?Who needs to be doing this, and is there a way I can put this in someone else?s hands??? he says. ?The key for the CEO suite is to recognize who has what talents, and make sure they do what they are great at. If you don?t have the ability to do something yourself, what you want is someone on your team who can help you accomplish the key things you need to do, so that you can execute your growth strategy.?

Araten has been able to successfully manage the growth of K?NEX through strategic planning and effective delegation ? knowing where he wants his company to go, and who can take it there.

To Araten, the plan is the known quantity, and the people are the variables. The success of K?NEX ? or any company ? is dependent on how well the team executes the strategy.

?If you have the right people executing on the plan, it will go really, really well,? he says. ?If you don?t, it doesn?t matter how good the plan is, it just won?t happen. That?s why the linchpin in all of this is assessing the talent of your people and making sure they?re doing what they are really good at.?

    Draw a map

    ?

The first step in any journey with a destination is to plan a route. When plotting a journey for your company, your route is outlined in your strategic plan.

Araten gathers all his top thinkers together for periodic strategy sessions, during which the team assesses growth opportunities that have either been presented to K?NEX or that the company is considering pursuing. The strategy team members weigh avenues for growth against a number of internal and external factors.

?It?s a risk-reward calculation, really,? Araten says. ?How much reward do we think we can get for a given opportunity, and how much risk is related to that reward? We look at how much risk we want to take, how much inventory we want to build, what does our distribution channel look like, and build a plan around that. Once we agree on how much upside there is related to how much downside, we go and execute on that plan.?

To develop an accurate strategic plan, you have to know what market factors stand the biggest possible chance of affecting your business. K?NEX exists in a market that is seasonal in nature, and produces a product with a very specific appeal to consumers. With that in mind, he set boundary lines for what his team could consider regarding growth opportunities.

?We?re a seasonal business, so there is a little extra risk involved with that,? Araten says. ?With every opportunity that comes along, we also have to ask ourselves if it makes sense as a building toy. Not to single out ?American Idol,? but even though the show is very popular, it probably wouldn?t make sense as a building toy.?

When Araten and his team did research prior to signing a licensing agreement with Nintendo last year, they started by figuring out the type of reach Nintendo had with its brand and video game characters, and by extension, the type of reach K?NEX could expect with cross-branded building toy products.

?We started by asking how many users of Nintendo products there are in the U.S. and around the world,? Araten says. ?For example, we know that 40 million Wii units have been sold and another 70 million Nintendo DS units. We looked at Q Scores of various characters, and those scores have always been in the top five over the past decade.

?We also did a survey of our key customers, so we knew that retailers were open to carrying a new product. So we took all of that information, looked at our budgets in several categories, where we?d find placement in North America, Europe, Australia and other places, and decided that we were comfortable making, let?s say, a $10 million investment in inventory.?

Good growth opportunities in the manufacturing sector usually center on two areas: new customers and new products. You either increase what you offer to customers, or you increase the pool of customers to which you offer your existing products. In most cases, your growth will result from a mixture of the two, and you need to account for that in any strategic growth plan.

In the toy industry, executives such as Araten are fighting a constant battle to stay current. Kids quickly grow bored of their current toys and parents are always on the hunt for the next smash-hit birthday or holiday gift, so the leaders at K?NEX have to harness their creative and collaborative power to stay a step ahead of demand.

In that battle, the wins you already achieved can act as a critical springboard for future wins.

?When you look at our history, our first big licensing deal was with ?Sesame Street? back in 2007 or ?08,? Araten says. ?Once we had ?Sesame Street,? and people saw how good we were performing and how well we could capitalize on the opportunity, licensors started coming to us with ideas.

?We were the ones who approached Nintendo for that deal, but we?ve had a lot of other brands come to us. That is where you want to build a checklist into any strategic plan that it makes sense for you. That you can reach consumers with marketing and distribution, and that the idea is a good match for your company. As I said, we want to make sure it?s an idea that makes sense as a building toy.

?We?re also starting to leverage technology so that we can ship directly to consumers in pretty much every country on earth. We want to be able to ship to anywhere from our warehouses in the U.S., so we are modifying our websites to be able to launch in a variety of countries that make sense. We?re working on both of those, and that is why we?re so interested in product relationships with global appeal.?

    Invest in human capital

A strong culture that embraces solid core values is a central component of any high-growth organization. But to have that type of culture, you need to first build a team that can embody and promote your values.

Many leaders reference the principle of getting employees in the right seats on the bus, as popularized in Jim Collins? book, ?Good to Great.? No matter what metaphor you use to illustrate it, the concept is true: In order to have a strong culture that can enable growth, you need the best possible people positioned throughout your organization in a way that allows them to grow as employees, and allows you to leverage their talents and skills for the best possible effect.

Araten says much of what he has learned about people stems from years of experience, which has helped him develop a reliable gut instinct regarding whether a prospective employee fits in the company, or whether a given team member fits in a specific role. But that isn?t enough. You also need to be able to ask the right questions.

?Some of what I do I?ll refer to as a ?friendly deposition,?? Araten says. ?You ask people a lot of questions about why they are doing what they?re doing, you apply common sense to what the answers are, and you see if they?ve thought about all the potential angles to a given problem or scenario.

?If they have experience dealing with that scenario in the past, that is something to consider as well, Araten says. ?In some cases, you?re going to have some new employees with limited experience, so some of what you are able to do is going to depend on where you are in your life cycle as an organization.?

In assessing a person for a job, promotion or assignment, you need to get to the core of their thought process. If you can peel back the onion layers on how they process information and solve problems, you?ll get a much clearer view regarding how they might fit your team.

?You have to look at the thought process of how they came to their decisions,? Araten says. ?If it makes sense, it looks like the probabilities are in your favor, and you can move forward.

?There is never a scenario where you have perfect information or a guarantee of success, so you just try to get as close as you can, make the move with the information that you have at the time, and the results are the results. More often than not, when we take that approach, things seem to pan out in our favor.?

If you hire or promote an employee into a new position, and the person falters out of the gate, making decisions that don?t bear fruit, you need to get to the heart of what is going wrong. It might be the person, or it might be the process. In either case, you need to get your hands on as much information as possible so that you can address the issue.

When K?NEX launched its line of Nintendo products, the team overseeing the launch made a miscalculation in the budget. Admittedly, Araten was not happy, but he didn?t go on the warpath, point fingers of blame at everyone involved. Instead, he used it as a learning opportunity.

?On a couple of the items, we underestimated somewhere on the order of $100,000,? he says. ?We thought it was going to cost $100,000, but it ended up costing $200,000. As part of our review on all the product lines, this comes up, and you could tell the person who was telling this to me was a little nervous. But we went through why it happened, whether we missed anything, and found that our logic was sound.

?In the end, we learned some things about what we could have done differently. We ended up improving some of our internal mechanisms.?

If you encounter a similar situation, Araten says you should do three things.

?One, figure out if the person in charge asked the right questions, and if the questions were based in logic,? he says. ?Second, if you would have done anything differently, what is it and did the person you put in charge know it ? or should they have known it? Three, teach them how to ask better questions. Oftentimes, as the CEO, you will have a much broader view of the organization, and will think to ask questions that the team or department leader didn?t. That?s part of the learning process. If everybody knew all the questions to ask, we?d have hundreds of CEOs in the organization.

?If you value teaching in your organization, teach people what questions to ask so they improved their logic. Then, the next time a situation arises, it goes smoother and reaches an even better outcome.?

Education: Political science degree from Stanford University; juris doctor from the University of Pennsylvania Law School

First job: I worked as a part-time sales guy at a leather and fur store in suburban Philadelphia.

Araten on building a high-growth organization:

I think you have to develop a culture, along with some mechanical things. You need to be able and willing to reinvest in the mechanical infrastructure, but to me the more important thing is that you need to create a culture where it is OK to take a chance going fast, where you forgive people their mistakes as long as their logic is good. So I think it is setting that tone from the top and letting your leadership team say it to the rest of the crew.

We are going to go a hundred miles an hour to try and take advantage of these opportunities, and we are going to miss some stuff. But as long as the logic is sound, what we miss shouldn?t be critical. Whatever mistakes we make, we will learn from and move on. It is easy to say, but the more critical part is the first couple of times you make those mistakes and learn from them and move on. That is what people really remember.

Araten on reinforcing a culture through communication:

I have one-to-one meetings with my leadership team every week. We are sitting together for at least an hour each week making sure that we understand what the priorities are and the logic behind the major decisions that we are making. When things go awry, it starts with me asking how we are going to learn from it so that it doesn?t happen again, and then moving on. Then, encouraging them to do the same thing with their teams.

On the flip side, you want to make sure that you are giving positive feedback whenever possible, whenever they are doing things that you really like. We have a few mechanisms in place for that, such as awards that any employee can give to any other employee when someone goes above and beyond the call of duty.
